Italian Citizenship Through the Boston Consulate

The Next Passport is not affiliated with the Italian government or any consulate. This page is informational only and is not legal advice — always verify details on the official consulate website before submitting documents.

If you live in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont, the Consulate General of Italy in Boston is the official jurisdiction for your Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) application. Italian citizenship applications must be filed with the consulate covering your legal state of residence — you cannot choose a different consulate.

Boston serves five New England states. Connecticut is deliberately excluded and falls under the New York City consulate's jurisdiction — a common source of confusion for applicants near state borders. If you reside outside these five states, check the nearby alternatives at the bottom of this page.

5 essentials for a Boston consulate application

  1. 1

Residency matters. You must have legal residency in one of Boston's five jurisdiction states (ME, MA, NH, RI, VT). Tourist visits or temporary stays do not qualify. Connecticut residents apply through the New York City consulate.

  2. 2

Appointments are booked through Prenot@Mi. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs a single centralized appointment system used by every Italian consulate worldwide. You must have an account and book a specific citizenship appointment slot — walk-ins and phone bookings are not accepted.

  3. 3

US documents require an apostille. Every US-issued vital record in your chain (birth, marriage, death, divorce) must be apostilled by the Secretary of State of the state that issued it. The apostille authenticates the document for use in Italy under the Hague Convention.

  4. 4

All US documents need a certified Italian translation. The apostilled document must be accompanied by a certified translation into Italian, produced by a qualified translator. The consulate reviews both the apostille and the translation at the time of your appointment.

  5. 5

Your Italian ancestor's records are the foundation. The application cannot proceed without the Italian birth, marriage, and (if applicable) death certificates from the ancestor's comune of origin in Italy. These must be requested directly from the Italian municipality or via a document service.
