Portuguese Citizenship Processing Times
The parent path typically resolves in 9–18 months. The grandchild path typically takes 18–42 months when submitted by an attorney through the IRN digital platform, and longer — often 2–4 years — when routed through a Portuguese consulate to the backlogged Central Registry in Lisbon. No paid expedite exists, but which route you choose materially changes your timeline.
This page is informational, not legal advice. Processing times vary by path, case complexity, the completeness of your documents, and the workload at the Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado (IRN) and the Conservatória dos Registos Centrais (CRC) in Lisbon. Timelines on this page reflect publicly reported ranges as of July 2026 and are not guarantees.
Current averages by path
Parent path (child of a Portuguese citizen)
9–18 months typical when submitted by an attorney through the IRN digital platform; a consulate-submitted parent application runs longer — on the order of 18–24 months — because it is forwarded to the Lisbon registry and sits behind the same backlog. Registration as the child of a Portuguese citizen is largely administrative — there is no language exam and no effective-connection requirement. Clean, well-documented files land at the shorter end of the range; missing or mismatched vital records push toward the longer end as the registry requests corrections.
Grandchild path — attorney-submitted via IRN
18–42 months typical. Since the IRN launched its digital submission platform in October 2024, attorney-submitted grandchild applications are filed directly with the Conservatória dos Registos Centrais (CRC) in Lisbon rather than being forwarded from a consulate. This route is generally the fastest for the grandchild path — but it still requires the A2 language certificate (CIPLE) and proof of ligação efetiva (effective connection), both of which take time to obtain before you can even file.
Grandchild path — consulate-routed
2–4 years typical. Applications submitted in person at a US Portuguese consulate are forwarded to CRC Lisbon, which is severely backlogged. The consulate step adds transit and queue time on top of the CRC adjudication itself. Many applicants who can afford the attorney route choose it primarily to avoid this longer path.
The 2026 nationality law does not change these descent timelines
Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026 entered into force on May 19, 2026, and changed the Sephardic route, added a great-grandchild route requiring Portuguese residence, and doubled the naturalization residency requirement. The parent and grandparent descent paths described here are unaffected — the rules and the processing routes continue to apply as before.
What to expect at each milestone
Month 0 — Submission
You file your package — either directly with CRC Lisbon through the IRN digital platform (attorney-submitted) or in person at a US Portuguese consulate. Consulate submissions add transit and pre-screening time before the file reaches Lisbon. Every US-issued vital record must be apostilled and accompanied by a certified Portuguese translation before this step.
Months 2–6 — Registration & case number
CRC Lisbon registers the file and assigns a process number (número de processo). On the attorney route this is visible through the IRN platform; on the consulate route you typically learn it only when the consulate or attorney relays it. This confirms the file is queued — but substantive review has not yet begun.
Mid-process — possible document request (exigência)
If the conservator needs clarification, they issue an exigência (a formal request for additional documents or corrections). Common requests: a corrected or re-apostilled vital record, a clarified translation, an updated A2 certificate, or additional evidence of ligação efetiva for grandchild claims. Respond promptly — an outstanding exigência pauses your case, and slow responses are one of the biggest avoidable causes of delay.
Decision — registration of citizenship
When the conservator is satisfied, your Portuguese birth record is registered (transcrição / registo). This is the moment you legally become a Portuguese citizen. The IRN registration fee is approximately €175 (roughly $205 USD). You can then request a Portuguese birth certificate (assento de nascimento) reflecting the registration.
After approval — Cartão de Cidadão & passport
Citizenship registration is a separate step from getting identity documents. Once registered, you apply for the Cartão de Cidadão (national ID card) and, if you wish, a Portuguese passport — typically booked at a consulate. Plan for additional weeks to months for these downstream appointments and deliveries.
No official expedite — the attorney/IRN route is the realistic accelerant
Portugal does not sell a paid expedite service for citizenship by descent, and there is no priority queue based on nationality. The single biggest lever on your timeline is the submission route: attorney-submitted applications filed directly with CRC Lisbon through the IRN digital platform (launched October 2024) typically move faster than consulate-routed applications, which must be forwarded to Lisbon and sit behind the same backlog with extra transit steps.
The second lever is document quality. A complete, correctly apostilled, correctly translated package with no chain gaps minimizes the number of exigência cycles — and each avoided cycle can save months. Neither route can undo the underlying CRC backlog, but both levers are within your control.
Practical tips
Compare the attorney route against the consulate route honestly
The attorney/IRN route costs more up front but is typically the faster path for grandchild claims. If timeline matters to you, price both options before committing — the difference between 18–42 months and 2–4 years is substantial.
Use recognized certified Portuguese translators
Rejected or unclear translations are a common reason for an exigência. Use a translator whose certifications the Portuguese registry accepts, and keep the apostille attached to the correct underlying document — mismatches trigger corrections.
Order your criminal record certificate last
US criminal record certificates (FBI plus states lived in) are generally accepted only within 3 months of issuance. Gather everything else first and order the background check near the end so it does not lapse while you assemble the rest of the file.
For the grandchild path, start the A2 exam early
The CIPLE A2 exam runs only a few times a year at limited US locations, and seats fill quickly. Because you need the A2 certificate before you can file, booking a seat early is often the real gate on when your grandchild application can begin — not the CRC queue itself.
Respond to every exigência immediately
A pending document request stops the clock on your case. Set up a way to be notified — through your attorney or the IRN platform — and treat any request as urgent. Prompt responses are the cheapest way to shave months off your total time.
Build a clean, complete package from day one
The Next Passport helps you build a tailored document checklist and track what's complete before submission — minimizing exigência cycles and shaving months off your total processing time.
